Calvin’s Response To Being Forced To Observe Christmas

This deserves a careful reading. Thank you, Sherry!

quotes and notes and opinions

Now, I see here today more people that I am accustomed to having at the sermon. Why is that? It is Christmas day. And who told you this? You poor beasts. That is a fitting euphemism for all of you who have come here today to honor Noel. Did you think you would be honoring God? Consider what sort of obedience to God your coming displays. In your mind, you are celebrating a holiday for God, or turning today into one but so much for that. In truth, as you have often been admonished, it is good to set aside one day out of the year in which we are reminded of all the good that has occurred because of Christ’s birth in the world, and in which we hear the story of his birth retold, which will be done Sunday. But if you think that Jesus Christ was born…

Quote of the day – Thoughts on Christmas from Beth

1 Chronicles 16:34

34 O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Beth, the author of the blog “I once was lost“, shared her thoughts, hopes, and experiences about not celebrating Christmas. She offered these in comments on a reblog I posted of Mike Jeshurun’s post

IF YOU’RE A ‘CHRISTIAN’ JUSTIFYING THE OBSERVATION OF PAGAN CHRISTMAS BY QUOTING ROMANS 14:5-6 . . . THIS ONE’S FOR YOU

If you’re interested in exploring this topic further, Sherry has a blog devoted to it, The X Mass H8rs Blog. Don’t be turned off by the name of the blog and visit Sherry there – she has a library of materials.

Here are Beth’s comments on not celebrating this day:

I believe that something we need to keep in mind is that just because millions (maybe billions) follow Roman Catholicism does not make Roman Catholicism right – same goes for the world making December 25th what they would like it to be. I’m out on that. That does NOT make me any better than anyone else it just reminds me as a follower of God through Jesus Christ it is another day I am allowed to REST in Him and what He has done for us – finished for us – through His obedience to God the Father. ❤️❤️❤️ His birth is part of the Gospel – Good News-message – we don’t need a puffed up day to celebrate Him – He is a celebration in our hearts everyday – He is the Gift we need everyday. ❤️❤️❤️

I believe that more witnessing has come out of me by NOT celebrating – I have honestly found it opens more doors up to the “fence sitter/non-believer.”

Posted with love!

I asked Beth, “Could you share more about your opportunities to witness?”

For example I clean houses – and I have had to tell my well-meaning ladies when they want to give me a gift the truth. I can’t just take it and say thank you – I am convicted to lovingly tell them that I don’t celebrate the birth of the Lord with the world. I let them know I celebrate it everyday because not only has his birth saved me – but his life, death and resurrection. So to celebrate with the world doesn’t make sense to me. Of course they still give me a gift – without giftwrap and a thank you card instead of a holiday card.

Strangers I tell them when they give me their merry wishes that I believe in The Lord – but do not celebrate with the world on one particular day – some get nasty… I have been accused of being legalistic and a grinch and a Scrooge – and a Jehovah’s witness – that’s ok though because I feel very convinced that God’s Holy Spirit has convicted me. So I will keep doing what I feel He has commanded me to. ❤️

It gets easier as the years pass … I just BELIEVE what The Good Lord has shown ME in His Word and convicted ME of through His Spirit. ❤️

HE IS A GOOD AND MIGHTY AND TRUTHFUL GOD – I will trust in and on Him all the rest of my days. ❤️

One of the questions I get is “Well what do you do that day?”  My reply:  “I do what I always do everyday in the Lord – I rest in what He has done for us through His finished work – like He tells us to do.”❤️

The scripture condemns such practices as Christmas. Jeremiah 10:2,3 tell us to “learn not the way of the heathen” and that “the customs of the people are vain.” In Matthew 15:9 Jesus explains that men worship Him in vain, “teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” In Colossians 2:8 we are told to beware lest someone should spoil us “through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world.” I Timothy 1:4 instructs us to “neither give heed to fables … which minister questions.”

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. . .

The Christmas Nativity continues to present a ‘baby Jesus’ to the world. This baby does not tell them that they are sinners in need of a saviour, this baby just lies there in a manger of a silent night, this baby is mute, powerless and lied about. This baby is not the truth!

Christian Christmas Chaos – The Tale of Two Fathers

by Helen
intro

OK, so this is all very basic Christian teaching so far; we initially belonged to a bad, lying father but then we had our spirit ‘born again’ when we repented of our own sins and were adopted into the Father God’s family.  From that moment, we each decide which Father we will listen to and which Father we will obey but we are aided and strengthened by the Holy Spirit as we abide in Christ and obey His word.

So now you are thinking, yes, but what does all this have to do with Christmas? You’re maybe thinking, I am a very busy person, it’s well into December already and I have presents to buy, food to cook, Christmas tree to get out of storage and decorations to fix up my house, and this blogger needs to get to the point real quick!  OK then, here goes!. . .”

Quote of the day – Tertullian

John 4:23,24

23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Alexander Hislop, in his work, The Two Babylons, states,

“This tendency on the part of Christians to meet Paganism half-way was very early developed; and we find Tertullian, even in his day, about the year 230, bitterly lamenting the inconsistency of the disciples of Christ in this respect, and contrasting it with the strict fidelity of the Pagans to their own superstition.

‘By us,’ says he, ‘who are strangers to Sabbaths, and new moons, and festivals, once acceptable to God, the Saturnalia, the feasts of January, the Brumalia, and Matronalia, are now frequented; gifts are carried to and fro, new year’s day presents are made with din, and sports and banquets are celebrated with uproar; oh, how much more faithful are the heathen to their religion, who take special care to adopt no solemnity from the Christians.’

“Upright men strove to stem the tide, but in spite of all their efforts, the apostasy went on, till the Church, with the exception of a small remnant, was submerged under Pagan superstition. That Christmas was originally a Pagan festival is beyond all doubt. The time of the year, and the ceremonies with which it is still celebrated, prove its origin.” (pages 91-93)
