Hi, Pastor Jim! I can’t remember where I found this image. Awhile ago I did this simple post and since this was a busy time posted it now. Here is a link to a website that is new to me where there are lots of images and some history:
“Hippo Regius was a Tyrian colony on the west coast of the bay to which it gave its name: Hipponensis Sinus, first settled by the Phoenicians probably in the 12th century BC; the surname Regius ‘of the King’ was bestowed on it as one of the places where the Numidian kings resided. The name Hippo is from Punic ûbôn ‘harbor.'[2]
“A maritime city near the mouth of the river Ubus, it became a Roman colonia which prospered and became a major city in Roman Africa. It is perhaps most famous as the bishopric of Saint Augustine of Hippo in his later years. In AD 430, the Vandals advanced eastwards along the North African coast and laid siege to the walled city of Hippo Regius.[3] Inside, Saint Augustine and his priests prayed for relief from the invaders, knowing full well that the fall of the city would spell death or conversion to the Arian heresy for much of the Christian population. On 28 August 430, three months into the siege, St. Augustine (who was 75 years old) died,[4] perhaps from starvation or stress, as the wheat fields outside the city lay dormant and unharvested. After 14 months, hunger and the inevitable diseases were ravaging both the city inhabitants and the Vandals outside the city walls. The city fell to the Vandals and King Geiseric made it the first capital of the Vandal Kingdom until the capture of Carthage in 439.[5]
“It was conquered by the Eastern Roman Empire in 534 and was kept under Roman rule until 698, when it fell to the Muslims; the Arabs rebuilt the town in the eighth century. The city’s later history is treated under its modern (Arabic and colonial) names.”
Wow thank you for posting and giving a link. It’s sometimes hard to visualize the place where some of these historic church saints lived at and sometimes its amazing to catch a glimpse of it from the modern scene of those locations. Thanks!
You are so welcome, brother! It is amazing and neat. The image I posted can be enlarged and you can say a lot of details of what appear to be Roman ruins. So glad you liked it. And thank you for your kindness in coming by and being interested, Pastor. I haven’t kept up with reading many blogs lately and I regret this and so when you comment here it is a matter for being grateful on my part.
=)
Okay, brother – discussion is good if we can let it go after offering our own view and listening to other’s. Sherry and I agree about not celebrating Christmas. Dr. James White said in a video that Christmas has Christian roots because the Early Church wanted to celebrate the Nativity and tried to find the best day on which to do this. His understanding of history showed that the controversy is a little more complicated than some Christians know. Pagan things attached themselves to the early more Godly celebration.
Never mind I tried to be nice and Biblical here’s a couple comments from today. BTW, Obedience to God’s Word is never debatable and its never a secondary issue. No matter how much you love the Christ Mass you need to put your love for your Savior above that. He knows your heart better than you do as to why you really want to cling to that “holy” day that He hates.
comes from humanism and its god called Hedonism. We need to stop making one thing our focus to the detriment of the truth in other things. We are called to be stewards of God’s truth and to expose evil like the deceptive lie that the Christ Mass is. Satan knows how to get God’s children to worship him-he is very sly and very beautiful and, like Siren’s song, very alluring. Christ Mass is about another Jesus. It is a stumbling block. God never compromises with deceptive traditions for the spread of His Gospel. Never!
I said Listen I just get tired of pointless debates we spend all this time talking about Christmas when the church in America is getting infected by Social Justice and other things that don’t belong in the church why don’t we use the energy wasted talking about Christmas and you it to warn others about Social Justice I mean did anybody on WordPress read the Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel maybe a few did.
Response. ts rather interesting to hear that we need to be concerned about social justice infiltrating the church when the biggest proponents of it are also the creators of christianizing paganism to up their numbers in the church, that is, the Roman Catholic Church! Hmmm….Oh, yeah! And they also use these unlawful “holy” days for social justice issues, too!
Okay, brother. Genuine Christians, born again and Bible-believing, will still disagree about things. Some day we will always agree because all will be plain – no more seeing through a glass darkly. Praise God!
So since you guys don’t do Christmas what do you guys do? I don’t think we should ever be forceful or condemn other Christians like me who celebrate Christmas agree?
My husband dislikes Christmas.
Christmas makes me very blue.
As Reformed Christians (Reformed Baptists) we follow what is called the “Regulative Principle of Worship”, which means that we worship the Lord only in the ways He has told us to, and since He never told us to celebrate His birth we don’t do this. Some churches follow the “Normative Principle of Worship”, which means that they won’t do anything the Lord forbids in worship. Lutherans go by this principle and many Evangelical churches do too.
All of this is made a lot easier for us because the family doesn’t gather for holidays of any kind anymore. So we’re let off the hook. If the family in Oklahoma lived nearby we would have to speak with them about this.
Right, I don’t have a problem with this for you at this time in your life. Jesus knows you and is leading you. But I would ask you whether it is possible that someday He may lead you to stop celebrating it?
I mean if the Lord shows you “someday” that He wants you to let go of Christmas. Dear brother, please don’t let anything I say upset you. You are a man of God.
And this comment. BTW, Obedience to God’s Word is never debatable and its never a secondary issue. No matter how much you love the Christ Mass you need to put your love for your Savior above that. He knows your heart better than you do as to why you really want to cling to that “holy” day that He hates.
Okay, I read this in the Chat Room, brother. I’m going back through and seeing what things that my sister Sherry said that I can “like”. She is very zealous and this is to be commended. But once people disagree with her she – just like the rest of us – needs to drop it because it will lead to strife.
Because I can’t celebrate Christmas does not mean that I think less of you, brother. I hope you know this!
Your welcome Maria. I hope you enjoy the video. Goodnight dear sister talk to you tomorrow Lord willing or unless the Rapture happens first! The Lord Jesus protect you guys!
Amen I agree. Thank you dear sister. Check out this Bible Verse. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 New King James Version (NKJV)
Serving All Men
19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; 20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the [a]law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without [b]law toward God, but under [c]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 to the weak I became [d]as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.
There are some discussions that can be good ones but liking to debate is a fault. Sherry doesn’t like to debate but she feels that she must warn people about celebrating. So, discuss lots of other things with her. She will enjoy that and you will too, and peace will abound.
Yes it does I plan on doing Christmas this year as a way to share the Gospel with the lost and to share why Jesus came and the story of Christmas in in Matthew and Luke right?
I have Mormons where I am at and they need Jesus and debating Christmas doesn’t do anything to share the Gospel with them we are running out of time to share the Gospel.
That’s fine by the way tomorrow is Halloween a day the we can share the Gospel and Gospel Tracts with the lost and show the that Jesus is the light of the world on this dark day.
Lutherans and Reformed Christians will talk about this day, but some Christians don’t know about this holiday and some dislike Luther for his human failings.
Right! We all have human failings. We should not idolize other people like the Reformers or great preachers or evangelists but love and respect them, forgiving their failings. You know this as well as I know this, Bibleguy. 🙂
This verse relates to the un-Biblical teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, which forbids their “priests” to marry and which made many laws about fasting and fasting from meat on certain days. Luther rejected a celebate clergy and married. Many of the German convents emptied of nuns who married. Very cool and so good of the Lord to provide for these people.
Yes! We’re all the same to Him – He loves and provides for each of us, maybe not exactly what we want but better in His eyes which makes it truly better.
That’s good I’m good thank you for was not able to go to church Sunday maybe this coming Sunday. Listen I never wanted to start a debate with Sherry I didn’t wake up and think that my point is while we as Christians debate Christmas people are going to hell.
I get that, brother – you didn’t start your day looking for a debate – that isn’t you.
Maybe since we’re One Body – the Body of Christ – and the Spirit of God gives us gifts according to His will, there are different issues of concern that people have and are concerned about?
No I didn’t wake up and say to myself I’m going to debate Sherry today I only said something because she replied on her chat room to me but I didn’t see it till then. Yes I agree but there are some things we need to talk about when it affects the church right?
Wow what an amazing photo! This really was the church location where Augustine was at??? Amazing!
