John 8:36 NKJV — “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
Glorious thoughts! Thank you, Lauren, for bringing us this hymn!
After witnessing some grievous sins this morning prior to fellowshipping, my heart is heavy, beloved brethren. One of the tremendous differences I see within my own self since God saved me by His grace alone is the desire to be absent from the flesh! Particularly this is true when sin is front and center. This hymn was such a beautiful encouragement to me today. I pray this blesses you all as well, and as always be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.
Absent from flesh! O blissful thought!
What unknown joys this moment brings!
Freed from the mischiefs sin has brought,
From pains, and fears, and all their springs.
Absent from flesh! illustrious day!
Surprising scene! triumphant stroke
That rends the prison of my clay;
And I can feel my fetters broke.
Absent from flesh! then rise, my soul,
Where feet nor wings could never climb,

Lovely song but this part is not biblical: “The angels point my way”

Sherry, okay. What do you think of these references? Could these support these lines from the hymn?
“My all that’s mortal I resign,
For angels wait and point my way.”
Luke 2:8-12
8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Revelation 17:1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,…”
Revelation 21:9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

Jesus said, I am the Way…Follow Me…the Holy Spirit reveals to us all that Jesus taught…He points to the Way. Angels are ministering spirits to those who already are in the Way, the Truth and the Life.

That’s up to you. There is a verse in Revelation 14 that talks about an angel declaring the gospel from heaven to those on earth but that is during the Time of Jacob’s Trouble of which we won’t be here then…
Revelation 14:6 King James Version (KJV)
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
And, maybe, the writer of the song was thinking of the angels of the seven churches which are pastors proclaiming the Gospel…messengers of the Gospel?

Perhaps he was thinking of Revelation 14:6. We can’t know unless he also preached on this somewhere.

If he was thinking of Revelation 14:6 then he believed he would be in the Tribulation since the Angel is proclaiming the Gospel to the Jews and unbelieving world. That Angel is not for our hearing-we know the Gospel.

Sherry, in Watts’s day this is what Christians believed. It is what I believe, in the Tribulation but not appointed to wrath. These aren’t equivalent. Also the Tribulation is not a final seven years. But we don’t have to discuss this (here). Watts most likely believed as I believe, living when he did. Please don’t throw your shoe at me through cyberspace! 🙂
