This is so sad and such a concern that I’m not going to add my own comment, except to say, watch and pray!
Matthew 6:9-13

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Luke 11:1-4
1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

1 John 5:16-21
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

No one has the right to alter the scriptures. No one! We all should tread carefully because many of us do so in practice. This is a sobering reminder to us all.

Very true, Matthew! You’re right that we all fail and need correction.Thank you for stating this here!

Thanks, Maria. In a certain sense, I understand Francis’ discomfort with the verse. Many a Christian pastor has had to explain to their congregations that the Lord doesn’t actually tempt us to sin, but that He does allow trials in our lives as per complementary Scripture passages. To me, it’s not a huge deal and easily clarified. As you suggest, we are not allowed to change one word of Scripture. It’s interesting that the pope focuses on this verse rather than the MANY other verses and passages that contradict Rome’s doctrines. This passage on the Lord’s prayer is one of the few that all Catholics know. Francis has declared that he is above Catholic dogma by lifting the ban on communion for remarried divorcees. Now he is declaring that he is above God’s Word.
