“The claim of some is that you don’t find the teaching of Justification Sola Fide (Faith Alone) in the Church until the reformation. As before, it is not just Roman Catholics that assert this. So to put this accusation to rest I have assembled a sample of Patristic quotes below from the same source used in my prior post. . .
“. . .The point is this, Sola Fide can be demonstrated very easily in the writings of the early Church. The truth of the Reformation is not a truth added to Christianity but the very Gospel itself restored. Don’t let anyone tell you that Sola Fide is a new doctrine. . .”

Thanks, Maria! Another excellent resource I came across regarding Sola Fide is “Faith Alone” by Thomas Schreiner.

Tom, thank you! I like this subtitle: “What the Reformers taught and why it still matters.” Yes, it still matters! Lord bless you!

Lord bless you, too, Maria! Unfortunately, I don’t think the 5 solas get much mention in churches these days.

Tom, it’s the view that history is unimportant and that we know better than Christians who went before us and formulated these things, and a suspicion of things like this.

True, Maria. And that attitude of ignoring history opens up some people to the trappings of Catholicism. Rightly or wrongly, there are those who equate centuries-old historical moorings with credibility and authority but don’t see any of that in contemporary evangelicalism.

Yes! This is the reason why I linked to the post about Sola Fide in the works of early Christians.

Tom, to amend what I said in my last comment, the reason I linked to the post by ACTheologian is that it is important to respond to the continual assertions by Roman Catholics that Scripture Alone is new, only a Reformation invention.

Yes, after Christianity was adopted as the state religion and the church became increasingly institutionalized, doctrines were formulated with little or no Scriptural foundation. Who could say no? Mariolatry is a good example. If there is no rule of faith then human imagination is the limit.

Yes, Tom, the fence is down on the sheep pasture and they feed on deadly stuff. Folly and ruin. Keep preaching the Gospel to them and others – know you will!

Tom’s recommendation of Schreiner’s book was exactly the book I was going to mention to you!

Faith alone, is never a new doctrine brethren. Yet the bible is clear on this issue as “faith without work is dead” which means as you speak with faith, so must you act accordingly…. #THeLoudCry
