Hebrews 12:1-3
NKJV
12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

Ah, such a good reminder! The reformation was about reestablishing Jesus on the throne, salvation by His grace and finished work on the cross and resurrection.

Good point from Al Mohler that the Reformers werent perfect…but they are our spiritual family! I literally just read Carl Trueman’s book on the Reformation on the point that the Reformers weren’t perfect but we must see their point is true concerning a right view of God and Christ so I take it that this is providence

Pastor Jim, yes, providential! You recommend Carl Trueman’s book then? His work has been recommended to me before. Title?

Its a small book called “Reformation: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” I just started it and am 30 pages into it and am enjoying it (review will soon follow on my blog towards the end of the week!).

Thanks, Maria. I imagine the vast majority of evangelicals have zero knowledge about the Reformation, the 5 Solas, etc. Here at WordPress, there’s even some Christians wise in their own eyes who badmouth the Reformers and the Reformation.

Tom, I’ve noticed this. It’s short-sighted and more than a little sad. With the weaknesses of the reformers, the power is seen to be of God.

Right, Maria. The Reformers certainly had their individual faults but the Reformation and the work of returning the church back to the Gospel of grace was a glorious work of the Holy Spirit.
