Suddenly! Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

“How long, O Lord our Saviour,

wilt Though remain away?

Our hearts are growing weary,

that Thou dost absent stay.

Oh when shall come the moment,

when, brighter far than morn,

The sunshine of Thy glory,

shall on They people dawn?”

Henry Grattan Guinness in The Approaching End of the Age

The Lord Jesus Christ came to us the first time suddenly. Though the time period of His coming was established (Daniel 9:24-27), the day was unknown.

The prophet Malachi’s beautiful prophecy of His sudden coming was fulfilled 2000 years ago. At that time He died for our sins, and rose from the dead for our justification. Here is the prophecy – how wonderful to think about Jesus suddenly coming to the Temple in Jerusalem, the One they worshipped literally walking among them there!

Malachi 3:1

King James Version

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

Another prophecy of Malachi about Jesus’ first appearance was fulfilled in every detail:

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

So, those things that the God of Heaven and Earth promised were fulfilled. How good God is, how faithful and true! And He has promised that He will return, and this too will be fulfilled, because He cannot lie for He is completely holy, good, loving, and truthful:

Zechariah 12:1,9,10

The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him…

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

And this loving promise will be fulfilled:

John 14:3

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

And this exciting and amazing one will be too:

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

And this majestic and awesome Word from God will be fulfilled!

Matthew 24

27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

It’s hard to wait, but we must. And we must continue to do what He asks and to be ready for Him to suddenly appear the second time, for He said:

Luke 12:40

Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

For believers, this is a wonderful thing. For the unrepentant and unbelieving, His coming will be just as sudden but terrifying. If you haven’t repented and trusted in the loving Son of God to forgive and save you, throw yourself on His mercy, for He will forgive you – no sins are too great! For as certainly as His promises to come again will be fulfilled, just as certainly will He receive you, for He said this:

John 6:37

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
