In all of God’s Word,
our lessons appear –
and beautifully varied!
When Adam and Eve chose to disobey the Lord, refusing to trust Him and desiring “to be like” Him, He cursed the ground from which Adam was taken. The good earth became infested with these hardy weeds that choked the growth of the things they needed in order to live, so that the earth had to be worked and the weeds uprooted. Here are passages of the Bible in which thorns appear for our instruction..
The first thorns
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
The Lord used thorns in a figure of speech to tell His people to repent.
3 For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
The Lord used thorns to picture things that make His Word unfruitful in people.
2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, 3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:… 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit… 13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? 14 The sower soweth the word… 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
The world used thorns to crown the Lord.
15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. 16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
A thorn kept Paul humble.
2 Corinthians 12:7
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
Someday evergreens will grow where thorns have grown.
12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
